As the second gig of the series Sound Friction, The Zen Ensemble will be the most noiseless and tranquil sound performance of this year.

Inspired by the concept of emptiness in Zen Buddhism, the dynamic Japanese multi-disciplinary group mAtter, together with selected Hong Kong sound artists, will bring us 'The Zen Ensemble' - a conceptual group that explores the composition and performance of silence.

For this special performance, a set of rules is composed to guide the artists to play ‘silence’ rather than making sound. In Zen Buddhism (an adaptation of Chinese Buddhism), it is said that our existence can only be found in the silence of the mind (or in fact, no-mind). The Zen Ensemble will be the first and only sound performance in Hong Kong that invites you to experience the absence of sound.

Together with stunning live visuals, this quiet sound revolution of The Zen Ensemble at Videotage is definitely a must-go for electronics and sound art lovers.

mAtter is a Japanese design group and independent music label that combines talents from various disciplines, including the acclaimed designer and sound composer Yukitomo Hamasaki, in which he draws his inspirations through nature elements such as light and space. Together the group blends sound and produce projects that integrate architecture, image-making and design. The tranquil sound quality contains layered waves of irregular clicks, pops, beeps and breaks, which brings the noise listening experience and sound art to a new level. For example the high frequency sound used in the album "d+p", some listeners claimed that it has an effect to distort their perspective on surrounding environmental noise.

Jointly presented by Videotage and Re-records, the Sound Friction series take sonic art as the anchor point and develop a creative performance platform for cross-cultural, cross-media, cross-disciplinary and cross-genres collaboration between artists.

mAtter is a sound & design project, with works centering around Yukitomo Hamasaki. The label takes approaches from various media such as sound design, architecture, and product design, in which the members interpret and restructures these concepts in different ways based on their own perspection, and try to achieve the goal of constructing dense space. We met through his label mAtter and decided that it would be interesting to work together. he sent me this music and I was amazed and at the same time, I had this image in my head that I thought would match this sound. 2009 was a year of learning.
I have made over twenty films that year and I regret that I did not film more. I was still new to film making and was not sure whether If I was into visual arts, and often worried that I was wasting my time on something that would just end as a hobby. Having that in mind, I still continued to film on my free time.
Within that year I have received recognition,nominees, label contract and job offers. Other peoples opinion has changed my attitude towards creating videos, and this year it seems more like working rather than just like a hobby and filming it in my free time. Its hard work but I dont mind it, when I have my camera in my hands, I feel most comfortable and it feels that Im on the right track.

Ken Hirama will be working under the label Edition Niko from 2010.
Edition NIkO was founded/curated and art directed by Japanese-American sound artist shotahirama in 2007. It is a label cooperation for electronic music based in Tokyo. The main interest was to give uniting sound and art design with strong attention to scientific sequences, Dada, Bauhaus, and drone ambient sound scapes. A surrealistic minimalism. So, priority is to publish series with focus on a specific philosophy of music/ sound/ art composing. Also it is a platform for conceptional and experimental related projects in music, art and sciencemusic both by myself (shotahirama) and by other artists and musicians. All NIkO releases have been on either MP3 or CDR (mostly mp3) as I feel that these formats currently offer the most appropriate form of reproduction. But its basically, a non-profit label..... NIkO Label was closed down at the end of 2008 and reopened in January 2009 as Edition NIkO.

Just purchased the New 20mm F1.7 for my GH-1. Great lens with amazing D.O.F coming from this small lens. this lens reminds me of my old 30mm f1.8 nikkor lens I used to use for my D90. I am fully satisfied with it and great for low light situations. this gives a new spice for my DSLR Filmmaking

DSLR Filmmaking- Final Cut Express 4

Last week I purchased Final Cut Express 4. Comparing it with the Imovie 09, its definitely harder to handle but sure has more things you can do with it.
My favorite function for now on FCE is the color corrector, which gives you the Bleach Bypass for film looks.
This is a huge step for me as an amateur editor and need practice but I am fully satisfied.

This was shot in Chiba, about two hours away form Tokyo.
I went there for personal reason and had my camera with me, so i thought I would make a little short film. I have a phobia towards sea and was not comfortable filming this but overall it was not too bad.
Like the last film (Empty) this one was also less than two minutes..I do not like how short my films are lately but I am currently working on a new short story...which hopefully be finished this year.

This was shot at Shinjuku. Left my house at 4:30am to shinjuku with Yuki Hashimoto (GekidanHattori/Debugons). Initially we went there for my film "A Cliche Love Story" but due to my lack of sleep, it was hard for me to concentrate on this film. Instead of filming the movie I decided to make a little video using the song that was stuck in my head. Once again due to my lack of sleep, I forgot to set up the ISO to Shutter speed and everything so it caused noise all over the video. this video might be my worst video yet.

- Film and You

Film making is a great tool or a way to reflect on yourself.
I have made at least 30 stories in my little notebook I carry around. The other day I was looking through all of them to figure out which stories I should film next. As i go through some stories, it clearly shows in the stories how I was emotionally feeling at that moment...,Anxiety, feeling lost, loving and hating someone,and all that.
As I was writing them I did not meant to write anything about my self..just tell the story that popped up in my head but there is always these essence of "me" into my stories.
that even goes to my shitty test footages on youtube too. the images and the music I chose at the time... Why did I choose that certain object to film and pick this certain music?...I guess is because its how I felt at that moment. If i felt somewhat depressed, I unconsciously chose a song which matched my moods and a video that projected my feelings.

Im not great with explaining my feelings into words but what Im saying is that whatever you create is a part of you, that goes with creating films, music, painting or writting. We use these things to express how we feel, and I guess thats what we call Art...
but why do I have the need to express myself? I dont even need to express myself and who cares about what I create or how I feel? And I also often think to my self "Why do I keep making these videos?".

I dont know....but I will continue to disturb you guys with my feelings.

Its been a month since the last upload on Youtube. I have been busy with my new films for film festivals. This video was shot within 2hours and edited in half an hour. I always wanted to use the theme song form the "eternal sunshine of spotless mind" that was composed by Jon Brion since it was one of my favorite movie score. But I didnt have any sort of idea for this song, It was intended to use it for a slide show style video with my photography but it was too boring so i just took a video of my doggy haha

GH-1 Short Film (Low Light) Production Note

This was shot in Ginza, Tokyo. One of the biggest luxury town in Tokyo and every time I visit Ginza,I feel alienated by the rich people. The reason I like this place is because of the colors of the neon that makes you feel like your in a Wong Kar Wai film. The first short film I shot with the Nikon D90 was also shot in the same area. My initial Plan was to do a little sequal to the D90 Short film but it didnt work out, and here are the reasons.I wanted to make it almost exactly like the D90 Short film so I took a similar shots and smoking my smoke in the exact same spot as half a year ago.
Once I got into the editing, I found out that I was making an identical D90 short film instead it was GH1...It was just boring, But i finished it and compressed it and was ready to upload it on youtube (even though it was pretty bad footage, I felt the need to upload somthing)....than my computer suddenly crashed and half of the footage disappeared. so with the footages that were left, I made this finished version which I thought was way better than the otherone but..still not satisfied. haha
well I hope you like this one.

It has been almost 2 months since the last upload and this will be my first upload with the new GH-1. This was taken on the day I bought this camera and wasnt sure about the settings and everything, but that was close to two months ago. within the two months I have been making several short film with this camera and overall I like the quality and the handling of the camera. comparing with the D90, its a little too small for me but put it on the tripod, it does not matter that much. the problem I had with this is compressing it to the best quality..The original footage was better but I do not mind it too much. overall Im satisfied with the camera and hope you will check out more of the films that I will post in the near future.

On June 12th, Japans releasing the "Lumix GH1A". The difference between the other one is that it comes with a different lens.
LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S.
The rumor is that this lens will not be able to do Full Auto Focus during Video Shoot.
On the sameday, they are releasing just the body for under/over a grand. im thinking of buying that instead.

DSLR Film Making

Many people argue with the use of DSLR Camera nowadays because of the "Video" function. Some say that DSLR is strictly for Photography and its not necessary to add video finction. Others like myself are satisfied with the new function.
The Nikon introduced the new D90 about half a year ago that can capture HD footage. Today there are many DSLR that can use the same function such as the Canon 5D mark2, 500D, Nikon D5000, Panasonic Lumix GH-1, and the new Pentax K-7.
Some people purchase these camera mainly for the photography use and others use it for video production use. The reason I believe that people buy DSLR instead of the camcorders are the variety of lenses you can choose from and the Depth of field you can capture with these lenses.
Is it possible to make a feature film by using these DSLR? I beleive its possible and some independent film makers already has done it. Film making became easier to do compared to several years ago because of the affordable editing software and cheaper HD Camcorder/ DSLR. But I dont beleive that if you have better equipment than you can make a great film. I once saw a short film shot with a cell phone and was amazed by it. I guess its not the money you put in the equipment but the Talent, Idea, Passion is the main keys to film making.

Production Note

I always wanted to do a time lapse video since everyone else is making a brilliant video. The motivation to make this came from the movie "Tokyo" which are three short films set in Tokyo, directed by Joon-ho Bong,Leos Carax, and Michel Gondry.
there was a scene in Joon-Ho Bong`s "Shaking Tokyo" where he did a time lapse of shadows moving.
When it comes to Timelapse video, there are many videos with crowded area or moving cars. but i thought it would be nice to do one with slow moving things.
The D90 can only capture 5 minutes so it was a bit difficult to capture something like the shadow moving.
I would like to take another shot at this time lapse in the future.

Production Note-

The Idea for this short film came from actual break at my work. as usual I went outside for a smoke with a baseball (gift from one of my students). just throwing it around and accidentally threw it on the second floor. thats how i got the idea...simple.
but the hard part was finding the actress, my group consists of three guys and it wouldnt be entertaining to watch when a guy is crying upstairs. I decided to ask one of my student, Lilia Ijiri to take part in this project.
We shot my scene the day before hers but the next day it was slightly raining and it is clear to see a bit of rain in the finished project. The shoot went smoothly with my Assistant Director Yuki Hashimoto.

Production Note-

One of my member Hiroyuki Toshida just purchased the Handicam Ivis G10 and wanted to get some footage for Youtube. I tagged along and went to the same park from "D90 Short Film Imovie09 and D90".
Once again I just stood there under the bright sun, thinking to my self "Did summer come already". I had my D90 and did not have nothing particular to capture..so i decided to just take some photographs of people. This Idea came from accidentally holding the shutter too long and captured about 5 photos in a second or so. when i was going through erasing the photos, i realized that it became a liitle slide show. So i continued to take more photos.
I came home with 1100 photos on my 8Gb memory card and uploaded to my computer. The Big problem was that when i uploaded it, everything was not in order. so I had to go through every shot and reordered it. This took me the longest to edit. I decided to do 2 frames per second and added a little antique look to it. Just to show how we spend our summer during summer and that it hasnt changed in generations..

Production Note-

After filming the last video with the flowes, trees and all the nature. I went home and realized how unnature my house was becasue there were no plants and looked depressing. I thought that I should by some plants to somehow bring home some nature in it.
thats where i got my little idea form bringing home nature through photographs. I called my new member Yuki Hashimoto to my house and finished filming within a day.
The idea of connecting all the photographs to make a huge picture was from Picassos "Cubism".
Overall I could have done better and added more twists to this film but ended up not the way I imagined.

Production Note-

This was shot during my short film "My First Journey" For a Film Festival. On the way to the location, there were many cherry blossoms and flowers that were beautiful. I never thought and pay a close attention to flowers before because i had no attraction towards them. but as soon as I started to capture these flowers and trees, I was shocked about how these tiny flowers looked through the camera.Most people do not pay attention to flowers or any sort of plant when your walking down the streets but if you look closely enough you will realize the details and the colors of these plants.

Production note-

I had no intention of filming that day but strangely it snowed in Tokyo. My friend just purchased the Nikon D90 so we went out near my house to film. We had our little towel on top of our D90 and a tripod.
My friend Hiroyuki Toshida was taking some snap shots of snow while I stood there in the cold thinking what i should do. I decided to just get a footage of the snow but it was too boring of a picture, so i decided that i should walk...lol
with no clue in my mind what im doing I just took several shots of myself walking through the Park.
After a hour or so, we headed back and uploaded my footage to my Imovie 09. I used the song from Norah Jones, since im a big fan of hers and thought it would match the clips....it was boring. nothing special, just me walking. I thought i would give it a different look using the "Effect" on the Imovie 09. I used the "Cartoon" effect and it was somewhat better.
I havent seen the video since.Its not my personal favorite. haha

With Four month in between the last D90 Short Films, I decided to take another shot at film making, since I purchased the new Imovie 09. Ive finally realized than that you can upload a movie on Youtube using the HD function.

here is how..

Go to "Share" on the top of the Imovie 09
and than click on "Export Using Quick Time"

after you type the file name and the destination
go to "Option" there will be a pop up.

under "video" click "Settings"
Compression Type should be H.264
Key Frame rate at 60
Birate 41000
Dimension 1280 * 720 0r bigger

Sound setting

Format AAC
sample rate 44,100khz
Channel Stereo
Bit Rate 128Kbps

D90 Short Film (Christmas) Production Note

Production Note-

This was shot several weeks before Christmas, and I thought It would be nice to capture the illumination lights in Tokyo. I headed out alone this time with my tripod and the D90 to downtown Tokyo.
I had this Image in my head and already have chosen a song for it. It was "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" by Sakamoto Ryuichi. This time I brought two 4GB SD memory card, not like last time. I remember that it was packed with couples since it was Cristmas season and the place I chose was an amusement park. I stayed out for about 4 hours, looking lonley and headed home with two memory cards full with footages.
Once I reached home and began editing, there was a problem with one of my memory card and all the footage disapeared. so I eneded up with a minute and a half footage rather than four minute footage...

Production Note-

This was my first attempt on making a short film using the New Nikon D90.
At the moment i had no idea how to use it, and was not sure about all the cinematography angles since we were all new to this "Film making". Only thing we had in mind was the movie we watched the night before "Blueberry nights".
My friend of mine Hiroyuki Toshida and I went out to downtown Tokyo to see how this "D-Movie" Worked. The only problem we had was that, we only had 1 GB SD memory card.
we were out till midnight, walking around to see if there are anything to capture. But I had no idea in my mind but only the music from the blueberry nights. I so decided to atleast try to shoot a video like Wong Kar Wai....
At home, I used the Imovie 06 from my Mac and tried editing. the one main thing that i strugled was that I did not have enough footage. That is the reason why I used soo much of the Slow motion clips.
